Dataset properties generally mean basic information of a dataset. For a vector dataset, the properties include not only spatial information but also attribute information. To browse the properties, select the dataset in Workspace Manager or Workspace Manage Window, right click and select Properties in the shortcut menu. The following figure shows a Properties dialog box of a vector dataset.
As we can see, the Properties dialog box shows basic properties, extent, tolerance, table structure and some other information of the dataset.
1 Basic Properties
Displays the name, type, and object count of the dataset. And in the character set drop-down list box, you can select a language for the text in the dataset.
2 Dataset Extent
Displays the extent and elevation range of the dataset.
3 Dataset Tolerance
Fuzzy: the least distance between vertices or nodes, that is to say, two vertices (nodes) can be regarded as one if the distance between them is less than this value. The unit is the same as that of the dataset. Often the value is 1/10000 - 1/1000000 of the dataset's extent and the system default is 1/1000000.
Grain: controls the number of vertices and the distance between them on lines that represent curves. The smaller the grain tolerance, the closer the vertices can be. Grain tolerance can affect the shape of curves. The unit is the same as that of the dataset and the default is 1/10000 of the dataset's extent.
Undershoot: the minimum length allowed for dangling arcs by the topology process, which removes dangling arcs shorter than the dangle tolerance. The unit is the same as that of the dataset and the default is 1/10000 of the dataset's extent.
Sliver Polygon: the minimum area allowed for regions in the dataset. The unit is the same as that of the dataset.
Overshoot: the maximum length allowed between an endpoint and any other arc. This will extend the endpoint to the arc if the distance is shorter than this tolerance. The unit is the same as that of the dataset and the default is 1/10000 of the dataset's extent.
4 Description
You can see or add any description you like to the dataset here.
5 Table Structure
Displays information of all attribute fields in the dataset. Also you can create or delete fields here.
6 Other Properties
Displays some other information, such as read only, user cache, lib index; long transaction, sequence, user lock, NONE; style, compress, encoding mode etc.
